RR beat PBKS as Ferreira seals chase in IPL 2026
Rajasthan Royals pulled off a high-scoring chase to hand Punjab Kings their first defeat of IPL 2026, with Donovan Ferreira and Shubham Dubey finishing strongly after a blistering start from the openers.
Chasing 223, Rajasthan Royals reached 228 for 4 with four balls to spare, riding on an unbeaten 77-run stand between Ferreira and Dubey that came off just 32 deliveries and turned the contest decisively in their favour.
Punjab Kings had earlier posted 222 for 4, but their total was eclipsed in a game dominated by aggressive batting throughout.
Early momentum sets the tone
Punjab Kings made a rapid start, powered by Priyansh Arya’s attacking approach in the powerplay. The side raced to 65 in the first six overs despite losing Arya early to Jofra Archer, who struck with a sharp delivery after extracting pace and bounce.
Prabhsimran Singh anchored the innings with 59, while Cooper Connolly added a brisk 30. However, Rajasthan Royals regained control in the middle overs through disciplined spells, limiting the scoring rate between overs seven and 16.
Stoinis lifts PBKS past 220
Marcus Stoinis provided the late surge that pushed Punjab Kings beyond 220. His unbeaten 62 off 22 deliveries included a brutal final over where he took apart Brijesh Sharma for 24 runs.
Alongside contributions from Shreyas Iyer (30), the late acceleration ensured PBKS finished with a formidable total of 222 for 4.
RR’s explosive start reshapes the chase
Rajasthan Royals responded with intent, racing past 50 in just 19 balls. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi led the charge with a 16-ball 43, while Yashasvi Jaiswal followed with a fluent 51 off 26 deliveries.
Their aggressive approach ensured RR were well ahead of the required rate early, even though Punjab Kings clawed back through spin in the middle overs.
Yuzvendra Chahal stood out with 3 for 36, removing key batters including Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel and Riyan Parag to briefly shift momentum.
Ferreira and Dubey close it out
With 72 required from 36 balls after Parag’s dismissal, the game still hung in the balance. But Ferreira and Dubey capitalised once the PBKS spinners completed their quota, targeting the fast bowlers effectively.
Dubey struck crucial boundaries in the 16th over, while Lockie Ferguson was taken for 16 in the 19th, sealing the momentum shift. Ferreira then finished the chase in style, hitting a six over long-on to bring up his second IPL fifty and secure victory.
The finishing partnership underlined the impact player role, with Dubey’s presence proving decisive in the closing stages.
This result marks Punjab Kings’ first defeat of the season despite posting 222, highlighting how Rajasthan Royals’ aggressive top order and finishing depth combined effectively. The win lifts RR to third on the points table, while PBKS remain at the top despite the setback.
