Wasim Khan to step down as ICC general manager after four years

Wasim Khan during his tenure as ICC general manager of cricket

Wasim Khan will step down from his role as the ICC’s general manager of cricket, bringing an end to a four-year tenure at the governing body.

He took over the position in May 2022, succeeding Geoff Allardice after the latter moved into the CEO role at the ICC. Wasim had joined the ICC following nearly three years as chief executive of the Pakistan Cricket Board.

A career spanning playing and administration

Before moving into administration, Wasim Khan had a playing career in English county cricket. He was the first British-born Muslim to play county cricket and represented Warwickshire during the mid-to-late 1990s.

A left-handed batter, he featured in 58 first-class matches and 30 List A games for Warwickshire, Sussex and Derbyshire. His standout season came in 1995 when he was part of Warwickshire’s title-winning campaign, averaging nearly 50.

Following his playing career, Wasim transitioned into administration, building a strong portfolio of roles. He served as CEO at Leicestershire County Cricket Club and earlier worked with the Cricket Foundation, where he played a key role in developing Chance to Shine into a major national cricket charity in the UK.

Key period at the ICC

During his time as general manager, one of the central challenges Wasim oversaw was managing an increasingly congested cricket calendar, with the rise of T20 and T10 leagues placing pressure on international fixtures.

Despite this, the Future Tours Programme for 2023–27, finalised during his tenure, included an increase in international cricket. The period also saw the introduction of the first-ever women’s FTP, marking a notable development in the global structure of the game.

His tenure coincided with a phase of significant administrative movement within the ICC.

Leadership changes at the ICC

Wasim is set to leave his role at the end of June and is expected to take up a new position from July.

His departure follows several high-profile exits within the organisation over the past two years. Geoff Allardice stepped down as CEO and was replaced by Sanjog Gupta, while Chris Tetley (head of events) and Alex Marshall (anti-corruption unit head) also left their roles.

Tetley has since been replaced by Gaurav Saxena, while Andrew Ephgrave succeeded Marshall in leading the anti-corruption unit.

What this means

Wasim Khan’s exit marks another senior-level change within the ICC during a period of administrative transition.

His tenure included key developments such as the expansion of international cricket in the FTP cycle and the introduction of the women’s FTP. With multiple leadership changes already underway, his departure adds to the ongoing restructuring at the global governing body.
