Islamabad United chase down 193 to seal Qualifier spot

Mark Chapman playing a shot during PSL match for Islamabad United

Islamabad United secured a crucial win to finish second in PSL 11, chasing down 193 against Multan Sultans at the National Bank Stadium in Karachi. The result confirmed Islamabad United’s place in the Qualifier against Peshawar Zalmi, scheduled at the same venue on Tuesday.

Mark Chapman’s unbeaten half-century anchored the chase, guiding United to a four-wicket victory with eight balls remaining in the 40th match of the tournament.

Chapman leads recovery after early blows

The pursuit began unevenly for United. Sameer Minhas fell early for 1 with the score at 10, before Devon Conway (18) added 31 with Mohsin Riaz.

Mohsin contributed 25 off 17 deliveries before departing, leaving United at 72 for 3 in 7.2 overs.

At that stage, the chase hinged on rebuilding momentum. Chapman and captain Shadab Khan steadied the innings with a decisive 63-run stand for the fourth wicket. Shadab struck 36 from 28 balls, hitting five fours, before falling in the 15th over.

Even as wickets fell around him late in the innings, Chapman held firm. His unbeaten 69 off 33 deliveries, featuring six sixes and four fours, ensured United completed the chase in the penultimate over.

Sultans post competitive total

After being sent in to bat by Shadab Khan, Multan Sultans posted 192 for 7 in their 20 overs.

Their innings began positively, with Steve Smith and Sahibzada Farhan adding 60 runs for the opening wicket. Both scored 30, with Farhan taking 18 deliveries and Smith one more.

The partnership was broken at the end of the powerplay when Salman Mirza dismissed Smith, and Farhan fell on the next ball to Shadab, leaving Sultans at 60 for 2.

Shan Masood then took control, compiling 44 off 33 deliveries with three fours and two sixes. He shared a 42-run partnership with Josh Philippe, who made 11 off 13 balls.

However, regular wickets disrupted momentum. Ashton Turner (9) and others failed to convert starts, as Masood was dismissed in the 16th over.

A late surge came from Arafat Minhas, who struck 31 off 19 deliveries, including three sixes, while Mohammad Wasim Jr added 26 not out from just nine balls. Their 55-run stand off 21 deliveries lifted Sultans to 192.

Collective bowling effort sets platform

Islamabad United’s bowlers shared the workload effectively. Chris Green, Salman Mirza, Salman Irshad, Imad Wasim, Faheem Ashraf and Shadab Khan each claimed one wicket.

The spread of wickets ensured Sultans were unable to build sustained partnerships beyond their opening stand and late cameo contributions.

What this result means

The win secures Islamabad United second place in PSL 11 and a direct path to the Qualifier against table-toppers Peshawar Zalmi.

By successfully chasing a target of 193 and maintaining control through the middle overs, United carry momentum into the playoffs, while Multan Sultans head into the next phase after finishing below them in the standings.
