Kingsmen storm into playoffs after crushing Rawalpindiz

Hyderabad Kingsmen produced a near-perfect performance to seal a playoff spot in PSL 11, overwhelming Rawalpindiz by 108 runs and overturning a significant net run rate deficit.

Needing a win by around 86 runs to break into the top four, Kingsmen posted a massive 244 for 6 before bowling Rawalpindiz out for 136, comfortably surpassing the required margin and eliminating Lahore Qalandars from contention.

Maxwell and middle order power surge

Inserted to bat after losing the toss, Kingsmen lost captain Marnus Labuschagne early. However, Maaz Sadaqat’s rapid 28 off 11 balls ensured a flying start in the powerplay.

Usman Khan, who has found form late in the tournament, anchored the innings alongside Kusal Perera as Kingsmen built a strong platform across the first ten overs. Their steady accumulation set up the kind of total required to overturn the net run rate gap.

The innings accelerated sharply once Glenn Maxwell arrived at the crease. Despite a quiet tournament prior to this match, Maxwell delivered a decisive 70, taking advantage of inconsistent bowling. Mohammad Amir, in particular, endured a difficult outing, conceding 57 runs in his four overs — his most expensive spell in T20 cricket.

Perera complemented Maxwell’s assault, while contributions continued deep into the innings. Even after Maxwell was run out in the final over, Hassan Khan struck 16 off the last three balls off Dian Forrester to push Kingsmen to 244.

Hunain turns the game with decisive spell

With the batters doing their part, Kingsmen’s qualification hinged on restricting Rawalpindiz to 158 or fewer. The chase began briskly, with Akif Javed and Saim Ayub taking 31 runs off two overs late in the powerplay, pushing Rawalpindiz to 55 in five overs and briefly putting the target within reach.

The shift came when Hunain Shah entered the attack. In his first spell, he dismissed Mohammad Rizwan and Kamran Ghulam within four deliveries, immediately disrupting the chase.

While Usman Khawaja held firm with an unbeaten 66, keeping Rawalpindiz within touching distance of 158, wickets fell regularly at the other end. Key moments included Sam Billings falling to a bouncer from Akif Javed, a sharp catch from Hassan Khan removing Dian Forrester, and Saad Masood holing out to Maxwell.

Hunain returned later to complete the job, finishing with 4 for 22. His final delivery, an inswinging yorker that shattered Ben Sears’ stumps, sealed the result and confirmed Kingsmen’s qualification.

What this result means

This emphatic win lifts Hyderabad Kingsmen into the PSL 11 playoffs despite a difficult start to their campaign, where they lost their first four matches.

The margin of victory not only secured qualification but also knocked Lahore Qalandars out of the tournament, underlining the significance of Kingsmen’s net run rate turnaround in a tightly contested playoff race.
