Sooryavanshi 103 in vain as SRH chase 229

Sooryavanshi celebrates century as SRH chase down 229 against Rajasthan Royals

A breathtaking hundred from Sooryavanshi was not enough as Sunrisers Hyderabad chased down 229 to beat Rajasthan Royals by five wickets in a high-scoring clash.

Rajasthan Royals posted 228 for 6, powered by Sooryavanshi’s 103 off just 37 balls, but Sunrisers Hyderabad responded with 229 for 5, getting home with nine balls to spare through a collective batting effort led by Ishan Kishan and Abhishek Sharma.

Sooryavanshi’s assault sets the tone

Sooryavanshi dominated from the outset after SRH opted to bowl. He tore into Praful Hinge in the opening over, smashing four consecutive sixes after an initial dot ball. He carried that momentum forward, striking five sixes in his first six balls faced.

By the end of the powerplay, he had raced to 51 off just 16 balls, registering yet another 15-ball half-century this season and reaching 1000 T20 runs faster than anyone before. He was also given a lifeline on 32 when Aniket Verma dropped him at the boundary.

Even after the field spread, Sooryavanshi continued to innovate, using shots like the reverse-swat and lofted drives to disrupt the bowlers. He brought up his century off 36 balls, his second IPL hundred, before falling in the 14th over attempting another inventive stroke against Sakib Hussain.

Lack of support holds RR back

While Sooryavanshi maintained an extraordinary scoring rate, the rest of Rajasthan Royals’ batting struggled to match his tempo. Dhruv Jurel contributed 51 off 35, adding 112 with Sooryavanshi for the second wicket, but the innings lost momentum after that stand ended.

Riyan Parag managed just 7 off 9, while the rest of the line-up failed to accelerate consistently. Donovan Ferreira’s late 33 off 16 provided a push, but SRH’s bowlers, particularly Pat Cummins and Eshan Malinga, controlled the death overs effectively with accurate yorkers.

RR’s total of 228 for 6, despite its size, reflected a heavy reliance on one dominant innings, with the rest contributing 125 runs off 83 balls.

SRH respond with balance

Jofra Archer struck early, removing Travis Head in the first over after an initial dropped chance. However, Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan quickly took control, benefiting from multiple reprieves as both sides combined to drop seven catches in the match.

The pair added 132 runs off just 55 balls, ensuring SRH stayed ahead of the required rate. Their partnership proved decisive, especially in contrast to RR’s one-sided scoring pattern.

Abhishek and Kishan consistently found boundaries, particularly through the off side, capitalising on width offered by the bowlers. Their stand reduced the required rate significantly, leaving SRH needing only nine per over in the final ten.

Chase sealed despite late wickets

After Donovan Ferreira broke the opening stand, Heinrich Klaasen (29 off 24) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (36 off 18) carried SRH closer to the target. Though both fell late, the equation had already been reduced to a manageable level.

SRH completed the chase with an over and a half remaining, underlining how their scoring at both ends outweighed RR’s reliance on a single dominant innings.

What this result means

Sooryavanshi’s 103 stands out as one of the fastest and most impactful innings of the season, but it highlighted a broader issue for Rajasthan Royals — the lack of sustained support around it.

Sunrisers Hyderabad’s chase, built on partnerships rather than individual dominance, demonstrated how shared scoring pressure can decisively overcome even the most explosive individual performances.
