Sanju Samson’s 101* crushes MI in record 103-run defeat

Sanju Samson celebrates his century during CSK vs MI IPL match

Chennai Super Kings delivered a dominant performance as Sanju Samson’s unbeaten century and Akeal Hosein’s four-wicket haul handed Mumbai Indians their biggest defeat by runs in IPL history.

In match 33 of IPL 2026, CSK posted 207 for 6 before bowling Mumbai Indians out for 104, sealing a 103-run victory. The result was driven almost entirely by Samson’s 101 not out and a spin attack that dismantled MI’s batting line-up.

Samson anchors innings amid collapse

CSK’s innings revolved around Sanju Samson, with no other batter crossing 22. He set the tone early, finding boundaries with ease, including drives off Jasprit Bumrah and a six off Hardik Pandya.

After racing to 44 off 20 balls, Samson had to shift gears as wickets fell around him. Between overs 7.5 and 15.1, he hit just one boundary, balancing the need to preserve his wicket while ensuring CSK pushed towards a competitive total.

That balance defined the innings. When the opportunity came late, he accelerated again, particularly against Krish Bhagat. In the 20th over, Samson faced all deliveries, refusing singles and collecting 31 runs, including three sixes and three fours, to bring up his century — his second for CSK in just seven innings.

Momentum swings through middle overs

CSK made an aggressive start despite batting first at Wankhede Stadium, reaching 73 for 2 in the powerplay — one of their highest against Mumbai Indians.

When MI attempted to regain control by picking up wickets and restricting boundaries over a 3.3-over stretch, Dewald Brevis counterattacked. He struck two sixes off Mitchell Santner, briefly shifting momentum before falling for 21 off 11 balls to Ashwani Kumar, who used short, slower deliveries effectively.

Afghanistan spinner AM Ghazanfar also made an impact, taking 2 for 25, including the wickets of Shivam Dube and Ruturaj Gaikwad, both of whom have struggled for runs this season.

MI struggle against spin

Mumbai Indians’ chase never gathered momentum. Early wickets from Mohammad Amir, Naseem Shah and Asif Afridi had already exposed vulnerabilities, but it was spin that sealed the collapse.

Akeal Hosein led the charge with figures of 4 for 17, including a wicket-maiden in the powerplay. Bowling in tandem with Noor Ahmad, he helped reduce MI to a position from which recovery was not possible.

Tilak Varma (37) and Suryakumar Yadav (35) offered brief resistance, but eight MI batters fell for single-digit scores. Nine wickets to spin marked a record at Wankhede Stadium.

Match context and impact

This result came with both teams placed seventh and eighth before the match, but the scale of CSK’s win significantly altered that balance. Mumbai Indians’ heaviest defeat by runs in IPL history underlines the extent of their batting collapse, while CSK’s reliance on Samson and their spin attack proved decisive in a high-pressure contest.
