United seal playoffs after bowling Kingsmen out for 80

Islamabad United players celebrate after bowling out Kingsmen for 80

Islamabad United stormed into the PSL 2026 playoffs with a crushing eight-wicket win over Hyderabad Kingsmen after bowling them out for just 80.

Chasing a modest target, United reached 83 for 2 with 80 balls to spare, registering the biggest victory in PSL history in terms of balls remaining. The result was built on a dominant bowling display that reduced Kingsmen to the fifth-lowest total in PSL history.

Gleeson’s burst sets the tone

United’s decision to field first proved decisive as Richard Gleeson dismantled the Kingsmen top order in the powerplay. He struck in each of his three overs, removing Maaz Sadaqat, Marnus Labuschagne and Saim Ayub to leave Hyderabad reeling at 24 for 3.

Operating on a hard length and exploiting movement in the air, Gleeson repeatedly troubled the batters, hitting a consistent six-to-eight metre length. The early collapse ensured Kingsmen never recovered.

Spin tightens grip on innings

The pressure continued after the powerplay, with Shadab Khan and Imad Wasim combining to break any resistance. Shadab ended a brief stand between Usman Khan and Kusal Perera by deceiving the latter with top spin, before striking twice in quick succession to expose the lower order.

Imad complemented him from the other end, dismissing Glenn Maxwell, who has managed just 26 runs in five innings this season. Kingsmen’s innings never gained momentum, with only Usman Khan offering resistance, finishing unbeaten on 25 off 35 deliveries.

Asif Mahmood struck the only six of the innings, but wickets continued to fall regularly. Kingsmen were eventually bowled out for 80 in the 16th over, with Gleeson (3-9), Shadab (3-13) and Imad (3-21) sharing the damage.

Clinical chase seals record win

The chase was effectively settled in the powerplay. Devon Conway fell early to Mohammad Ali, but Mohsin Riaz, on his PSL debut, and Sameer Minhas took control with a rapid 79-run partnership off just 38 balls.

Mohsin led the charge with 42 off 18 deliveries, striking consecutive sixes off Hassan Khan, while Sameer contributed 27 not out off 20. Their aggressive approach ensured the required rate dropped sharply within the first six overs.

United needed only three runs after the powerplay. Mohsin’s dismissal briefly delayed the finish, but Shadab Khan completed the chase in the seventh over with a boundary.

Match context and impact

This emphatic win secures Islamabad United a place in the PSL 2026 playoffs and keeps them in contention for a top-two finish ahead of their final league match against Multan Sultans. For Hyderabad Kingsmen, the heavy defeat leaves their qualification hopes dependent on other results, with multiple teams locked on eight points in the race for the final spot.
