Afghanistan vs Sri Lanka Series Postponed
The Afghanistan Sri Lanka series scheduled to take place in the United Arab Emirates has been postponed due to logistical challenges, the Afghanistan Cricket Board confirmed on Wednesday.
The white-ball series was originally set to run from March 13 to March 25 and was scheduled to feature three T20Is and three ODIs between Afghanistan and Sri Lanka.
However, the Afghanistan Cricket Board announced that logistical issues, including flight constraints caused by the ongoing regional situation in West Asia, forced the postponement of the Afghanistan Sri Lanka series until the last quarter of 2026.
According to the Afghanistan Cricket Board statement, preparations had already been completed after receiving approval from the Emirates Cricket Board to host matches at two venues in the United Arab Emirates.
However, unforeseen developments in early March created travel complications and operational difficulties that affected the planning of the Afghanistan Sri Lanka series.
To address the situation, the Afghanistan Cricket Board held consultations with several stakeholders, including the Emirates Cricket Board, Sharjah Cricket Stadium and Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
A joint meeting held on March 4 recommended monitoring the situation and reassessing the circumstances by March 6 in the hope that travel conditions would improve.
Another follow-up meeting on March 7 suggested waiting until March 9 before making a final decision.
Despite these discussions and efforts by all parties involved, the logistical challenges remained beyond operational control, ultimately leading to the postponement of the Afghanistan Sri Lanka series.
Under the original schedule, the T20I matches were planned to be played in Sharjah on March 13, March 15 and March 17.
The ODI matches were scheduled to take place in Dubai on March 20, March 22 and March 25.
The Afghanistan Cricket Board also confirmed that the United Arab Emirates remains the preferred venue for the rescheduled series, with new dates expected to be announced later following consultations with Sri Lanka Cricket and other stakeholders.
The postponed Afghanistan Sri Lanka series was also set to be Afghanistan’s first under the leadership of Ibrahim Zadran, who recently took over captaincy from Rashid Khan after Afghanistan’s group-stage exit in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
