KKR end SRH streak as Varun, Narine turn the game
Kolkata Knight Riders halted Sunrisers Hyderabad’s five-match winning run in IPL 2026 with a composed seven-wicket victory, built around the spin pairing of Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine.
In a contest where the surface slowed significantly, KKR’s spinners dictated the outcome, triggering a collapse that transformed SRH’s strong start into a below-par total.
Kolkata Knight Riders 169 for 3 (Raghuvanshi 59, Rahane 43, Sakib 1-17) beat Sunrisers Hyderabad 165 (Head 61, Kishan 42, Varun 3-36, Tyagi 2-30, Narine 2-31) by seven wickets.
SRH dominate early but lose control
After opting to bat, Sunrisers Hyderabad made an aggressive start through Travis Head, who attacked from the outset. He struck Vaibhav Arora for four boundaries in the second over and continued his assault against Sunil Narine, clearing the ropes and maintaining the tempo.
Head brought up his half-century in just 22 balls and, alongside Abhishek Sharma and later Ishan Kishan, powered SRH beyond 70 in the powerplay for the sixth time in ten innings this season.
At 105 for 1 in the ninth over, SRH appeared firmly in control. However, the match shifted dramatically when Varun Chakravarthy dismissed Head, who had scored 61.
Spin duo dismantle SRH middle order
That breakthrough opened the door for a collapse. Varun Chakravarthy removed debutant R Smaran, who replaced the unwell Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Aniket Verma as SRH’s aggressive approach began to unravel on a slowing pitch.
The inability to adjust to conditions became evident as batters continued to target boundaries despite the increasing difficulty of stroke-making.
Sunil Narine played an equally significant role. He dismissed Ishan Kishan for 42 and reached a major milestone by becoming the first overseas bowler—and third overall after Yuzvendra Chahal and Bhuvneshwar Kumar—to claim 200 IPL wickets when he bowled Salil Arora.
Heinrich Klaasen’s promising start was cut short by a one-handed catch from Rovman Powell, further tightening KKR’s grip on the innings.
From a dominant 105 for 1, SRH slipped to 165 all out in 19 overs, losing nine wickets for 60 runs. The turning point came immediately after Head’s dismissal, as the innings lost direction and momentum.
Raghuvanshi anchors a controlled chase
KKR’s chase was shaped early by an aggressive powerplay. Finn Allen, replacing Tim Seifert, attacked Pat Cummins with three fours and two sixes, propelling KKR to 71 in the first six overs.
Although Cummins dismissed Allen with a slower delivery that held in the pitch, the early burst reduced the pressure on the middle order.
Ajinkya Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi then stabilised the innings with an 84-run partnership. Raghuvanshi, scoring a career-best 59 off 47 balls, ensured the chase remained steady, while Rahane contributed 43 off 36 balls.
Even after both set batters fell—Rahane to Sakib Hussain and Raghuvanshi to Shivang Kumar—KKR were firmly in control of the equation.
Rinku Singh and Cameron Green completed the chase with ease, sealing victory with ten balls remaining.
What decided the match
The contest turned on the shift in conditions and how each side responded. SRH’s aggressive approach brought early rewards, but their inability to adapt once the pitch slowed proved costly.
KKR, in contrast, used their spin resources effectively. Varun Chakravarthy’s middle-overs breakthroughs and Narine’s control, combined with his milestone performance, dismantled SRH’s momentum at a crucial phase.
What this result means
This win gives Kolkata Knight Riders their third successive victory in IPL 2026 and reinforces their ability to control matches through spin on slower surfaces.
For Sunrisers Hyderabad, the defeat ends a five-match winning streak and highlights how quickly a dominant position can shift when conditions change and momentum is lost.
