Hunain Shah reveals six-yorker plan behind PSL 2026 heroics
Hyderabad Kingsmen’s dramatic win in PSL 2026 Eliminator 2 was defined by Hunain Shah’s ice-cold execution at the death, with the young pacer revealing a simple but decisive plan behind his match-winning final over.
With Islamabad United needing six runs in the final over, Hunain committed to a single approach — six yorkers — a strategy that ultimately sealed a two-run victory and sent Kingsmen into the final.
“We had to go in with one plan, bowl six yorkers,” Hunain said after the match. “We kept it simple. We had to save six runs. We just needed to adjust the line of the yorker, but it had to be a yorker.”
Clarity under pressure defines the over
The task itself was unprecedented. United required six runs in the final over of a PSL playoff — a situation never before successfully defended in the tournament’s knockout history, and achieved only twice in league-stage matches.
Despite the pressure, Hunain’s clarity stood out. While the first delivery missed its intended length and was bowled short and wide, it still yielded no significant damage as Chris Green failed to capitalise.
From there, Hunain executed his plan relentlessly. The remaining five deliveries were fired in full and fast, with subtle variations in line to counter left-handers Faheem Ashraf and Imad Wasim. The consistency of his execution gradually choked United’s chase, turning a near-certain win into a tense collapse.
The match had appeared to swing decisively in United’s favour after they collected 22 runs in the previous over, but the final six balls shifted momentum entirely.
Preparation meets opportunity
Hunain’s performance was rooted in deliberate preparation. Over the past six months, he had worked extensively on his bowling, with a particular focus on executing yorkers under pressure.
“I’ve worked a lot over the past six months with a view to performing in this PSL,” he said. “I felt whenever I got the chance, I’d perform here because I had a lot of tough times and injuries earlier. This is a result of my hard work.”
“I spent a whole week just bowling yorkers, so that I made sure I could nail them when the team needed them.”
“You believe you can execute when you’ve worked on it. If you’re mentally clear, execution becomes easier. I went for six yorkers, set the field accordingly, believed, and did it.”
That focused preparation was evident in the final over, where execution under pressure matched intent almost perfectly.
From heartbreak to redemption
The defining moment gains further weight when placed alongside Hunain’s earlier experience in the tournament.
In Kingsmen’s fourth game of the season against Peshawar Zalmi, he had faced a similar challenge. After conceding just two runs in the 18th over, he was tasked with defending 14 in the final over. Again, he opted for yorkers — but minor errors turned deliveries into a low full toss and a half-volley, allowing Zalmi to seal victory off the last ball.
“I first played against Peshawar Zalmi,” Hunain recalled. “I couldn’t defend the runs. It’s not unusual that you do bowl one or two inaccurate balls.”
That earlier disappointment, where he was left in tears, provided a stark contrast to the composure he displayed in the Eliminator.
A team difficult to decode
Kingsmen’s victory has now set up a PSL 2026 final against Peshawar Zalmi — the same side involved in Hunain’s earlier heartbreak.
Hunain pointed to the team’s collective strength as a defining factor heading into the final.
“We’ll try to play well as a team. I’ve mentioned that everyone is performing in our team. Someone or other is standing out, and it’s a different person almost every game.”
“When you’ve got so many match-winners, then you don’t run into too many difficulties, and it’s very difficult to plan against us.”
He contrasted this with how teams typically prepare against specific individuals, noting that Kingsmen’s contributions have come from across the lineup.
Emotional payoff and final hurdle
The emotional release at the end of the match reflected the magnitude of the moment. Captain Marnus Labuschagne, who had earlier backed Hunain in a difficult moment earlier in the tournament, was among the first to celebrate — sprinting across the field before embracing the young pacer as teammates lifted him in celebration.
That trust, combined with preparation and clarity, culminated in one of the most dramatic finishes of PSL 2026.
What this result means
Hunain Shah’s final over, with Islamabad United needing six runs, secured Hyderabad Kingsmen a place in the PSL 2026 final and underlined how precise execution under pressure can decide knockout matches.
Having turned a seemingly winning position for United into defeat, Kingsmen now carry decisive momentum into the final against Peshawar Zalmi, with their belief reinforced by one of the tournament’s defining moments.
