Gaikwad, Kartik lead Chennai Super Kings to second win
Chennai Super Kings secured a comprehensive eight-wicket win over Mumbai Indians, completing a season double in the CSK vs MI rivalry and pushing their opponents closer to elimination.
Chasing 160 at Chepauk, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Kartik Sharma struck unbeaten half-centuries to guide CSK to 160 for 2, finishing the chase with authority after their bowlers had restricted MI to 159 for 7.
The result lifts CSK to sixth on the points table with their fourth win in nine games, while MI’s campaign continues to falter.
CSK bowlers restrict MI after powerplay burst
After being asked to bat first, Mumbai Indians made a flying start, smashing seven sixes in the powerplay. Ryan Rickelton accounted for five of those, but the early momentum was offset by 19 dot balls in the same phase.
Rickelton and Naman Dhir took MI to 57 for 1 after six overs, but CSK’s bowling unit steadily pulled things back. The hosts consistently hit hard lengths and good areas, making run-scoring increasingly difficult as the innings progressed.
Anshul Kamboj led the effort with figures of 3 for 32, while Noor Ahmad provided key breakthroughs, removing both Rickelton (37) and Tilak Varma. Ramakrishna Ghosh also made an impact, dismissing Suryakumar Yadav for 21 off 12 balls and finishing with 1 for 24.
Despite the strong start, MI managed only three sixes across the final 14 overs, highlighting a clear slowdown after the powerplay.
Dhir holds firm but MI fall short
Naman Dhir top-scored with 57 off 37 deliveries, anchoring the innings but unable to significantly accelerate through the middle overs.
Tilak Varma, after being dropped on 1, added just four more runs before falling to Noor Ahmad, while Suryakumar Yadav’s struggles against pace continued.
Captain Hardik Pandya laboured to 18 off 23 balls before falling to Kamboj in the final over, further underlining MI’s inability to convert their strong start into a bigger total.
The innings eventually closed at 159 for 7, a total that proved insufficient given the conditions.
Gaikwad and Kartik dominate the chase
CSK’s chase began with an early setback as Sanju Samson fell to Jasprit Bumrah for 11 off nine balls in the second over, after edging twice in the same over.
From there, Gaikwad and Kartik took complete control. Gaikwad set the tone by attacking Trent Boult early, striking two fours and a six in the third over before progressing to 67 not out.
At the other end, Kartik countered effectively against spin, particularly targeting AM Ghazanfar. He struck 54 not out and sealed the victory in style with a reverse-scoop off Boult.
Their unbeaten partnership ensured CSK chased down the target comfortably, finishing with eight wickets in hand.
What shaped the result
The match turned on the contrast between MI’s explosive start and their inability to sustain momentum. After scoring freely in the powerplay, they struggled to find boundaries against disciplined bowling, allowing CSK to regain control.
In reply, the chase was defined by composure rather than risk. Gaikwad and Kartik maintained control throughout, ensuring the required rate never became a factor and effectively neutralising MI’s bowling attack.
What this means for both teams
The victory completes a season double for Chennai Super Kings over Mumbai Indians and strengthens CSK’s position in the points table with a fourth win in nine matches.
For Mumbai Indians, the defeat leaves them on the brink of elimination, with their inconsistency across phases once again proving costly in a must-win fixture.
