Gujarat Titans beat RCB as Holder stars in NRR boost
Gujarat Titans secured a crucial IPL 2026 victory in Ahmedabad, defeating Royal Challengers Bengalore by four wickets in a low-scoring contest shaped by Jason Holder’s all-round involvement.
Defending champions RCB were bowled out for 155, with GT chasing down the target at 158 for 6. The result not only handed RCB their third defeat of the season but also provided a valuable net run rate boost for Gujarat Titans.
Holder drives GT’s dominant bowling effort
Jason Holder was at the centre of Gujarat’s bowling performance, playing a role in five dismissals as RCB were restricted to 155.
RCB made an aggressive start, with Virat Kohli striking four consecutive boundaries off Kagiso Rabada in the second over. He continued the charge against Mohammed Siraj but fell for 28 off 13 balls when Rabada drew a top edge.
Siraj had earlier removed Jacob Bethell for 5, as GT kept RCB to 59 for 2 in the powerplay.
A key moment arrived when Devdutt Padikkal and Rajat Patidar added 44 runs for the third wicket before Holder completed a contentious catch at deep square leg to dismiss Patidar. Despite doubts raised over whether the ball had touched the ground, the TV umpire ruled it out, prompting visible disagreement from RCB players and staff.
Holder remained heavily involved thereafter, dismissing Romario Shepherd and taking catches to remove Jitesh Sharma, Tim David and Krunal Pandya. His impact ensured RCB never built sustained momentum.
Padikkal top-scored with 40 off 24 balls before being bowled by Rashid Khan, while a late 29-run stand between Venkatesh Iyer and Bhuvneshwar Kumar pushed RCB to 155. Arshad Khan led the bowling with 3 for 22, while Rashid Khan (2 for 19) and Holder (2 for 29) provided key support.
Gill and Buttler set the tone early
Gujarat Titans began their chase aggressively, with Shubman Gill launching Josh Hazlewood for a 24-run over featuring three fours and two sixes — the most runs Hazlewood has conceded in an IPL over.
Gill raced to 43 off 18 balls before falling to Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who also dismissed Sai Sudharsan in a disciplined spell of 3 for 28.
Jos Buttler then maintained the tempo, scoring 39 off 19 balls before losing his leg stump to Bhuvneshwar in the eighth over. Despite the strong start, GT lost momentum as wickets fell in clusters.
Tewatia and Holder guide GT home
With the chase slipping, Romario Shepherd struck a decisive blow by removing Shahrukh Khan and Washington Sundar in the same over, tightening the contest.
However, Holder shifted momentum immediately by hitting a six off his first ball, easing the pressure. When he departed for 12 off 10 balls in the 14th over, GT needed just 15 runs from 37 deliveries.
Rahul Tewatia then ensured there were no further hiccups, finishing unbeaten on 27 off 17 balls. He and Rashid Khan completed the chase with 25 balls remaining to seal the win.
What shaped the result
The match turned on Gujarat Titans’ bowling discipline, particularly through Holder’s all-round contribution and Arshad Khan’s three-wicket haul. RCB’s innings never fully recovered from regular wickets, despite Padikkal’s effort.
In contrast, GT’s top order provided a rapid start, and although the middle order faltered again, the presence of Tewatia and Holder ensured the chase stayed under control.
What this result means
This win strengthens Gujarat Titans’ position in IPL 2026, with the improved net run rate adding further value to the result.
For Royal Challengers Bengalore, the defeat highlights missed opportunities with the bat, as 155 proved insufficient after early promise. The outcome reinforces GT’s ability to close out tight chases even when momentum shifts during the innings.
