Tilak Varma Century Leads MI to Big Win Over GT

Tilak Varma celebrating his century for Mumbai Indians against Gujarat Titans in IPL 2026

Mumbai Indians produced a commanding turnaround to end their losing run, with a stunning Tilak Varma century leading them to a 99-run win over Gujarat Titans in match 30 of IPL 2026.

Set 200 to chase, Gujarat Titans were bowled out for just 100, falling one run short of Tilak’s unbeaten 101 as Mumbai sealed a comprehensive victory.

Mumbai Indians posted 199 for 5 after recovering from 103 for 4 in 14 overs. Tilak Varma’s remarkable innings transformed the contest, as he smashed 101 not out, while Naman Dhir contributed a crucial 45. For Gujarat Titans, Kagiso Rabada led the bowling with 3 for 33.

In response, Gujarat Titans never found momentum. Washington Sundar top-scored with 26, while Ashwani Kumar (4 for 24), Mitchell Santner (2 for 16), and AM Ghazanfar (2 for 17) dismantled the chase.

Tilak Varma turns the match on its head

The defining phase came in the final six overs of Mumbai’s innings. Tilak Varma exploded after a quiet start, having not hit a boundary in his first 20 balls.

He went on to score 82 runs in the last six overs — the most ever by a batter in that phase of an IPL innings. His 45-ball hundred also equalled the fastest century for Mumbai Indians, matching Sanath Jayasuriya’s effort.

Tilak accelerated dramatically after reaching his half-century. His first 40 balls produced 63 runs, but the final 12 deliveries yielded 37, as he dominated the closing stages.

Dhir holds firm during early collapse

While Tilak finished the job, Naman Dhir played a key role when Mumbai were under pressure early.

Coming in at No. 3, Dhir scored 45 off 32 balls after Mumbai had slipped to 44 for 3. His innings came against a disciplined spell from Gujarat’s pace attack and ensured Mumbai had a platform to build on.

GT quicks dominate the powerplay

Gujarat Titans made a strong start with the ball, with Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada operating like a Test match pair in the powerplay.

Siraj conceded just 15 runs in his three overs, while Rabada removed Danish Malewar, Quinton de Kock and Suryakumar Yadav with high-pace deliveries clocked at over 150 kmph.

Rashid Khan then controlled the middle overs, keeping the scoring in check before Tilak’s late assault shifted the momentum.

Tilak capitalises on errors

The shift in the game came when Gujarat’s bowlers lost discipline in the death overs.

Prasidh Krishna, despite having a field set for short bowling, delivered a series of full balls in the 15th over, allowing Tilak to collect 16 runs. The pressure only intensified as Rashid Khan and Ashok Sharma also conceded heavily.

Tilak’s dominance was highlighted in the 18th over, where he struck boundaries off deliveries that largely followed plans, showing complete control at the crease.

He brought up his century on the final ball of the innings with a boundary, completing a remarkable turnaround knock.

Early breakthroughs seal the chase

The momentum carried straight into Gujarat’s innings. Jasprit Bumrah struck with the first ball, dismissing B Sai Sudharsan to end his wicketless run in the tournament.

Hardik Pandya then removed Jos Buttler via lbw, and Shubman Gill fell soon after, leaving Gujarat without their key batters inside the powerplay.

At 45 for 3 after six overs, the chase mirrored Mumbai’s start, but unlike them, Gujarat could not recover.

Spin and pace dismantle GT

Mitchell Santner removed Washington Sundar and Glenn Phillips in the same over, effectively ending any hopes of resistance.

Ashwani Kumar capitalised on mounting pressure to claim four wickets, while AM Ghazanfar cleaned up the tail with two late strikes, including dismissing Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada.

Despite brief resistance from Washington and a few late hits, Gujarat Titans never threatened the target.

What this result means

This victory ends Mumbai Indians’ four-match losing streak and significantly boosts their position after a difficult start to IPL 2026.

The match was defined by Tilak Varma’s century, which not only lifted Mumbai to a competitive total but also ensured Gujarat Titans fell short of his individual score — a rare outcome that underlined the dominance of his innings.
