PBKS smash 254 as Arya, Connolly dominate

Priyansh Arya and Cooper Connolly batting during PBKS innings in IPL 2026

Punjab Kings delivered a commanding performance in match 29 of IPL 2026, with Priyansh Arya and Cooper Connolly leading the charge in a dominant 54-run win over Lucknow Super Giants.

Posting 254 for 7 — the highest total of the season — PBKS overwhelmed LSG, who managed 200 for 5 in response, as the unbeaten run stretched to six matches.

Arya and Connolly build record-breaking total

Set the task of batting first for the first time this season, Punjab adapted emphatically on a fresh New Chandigarh surface. Despite losing Prabhsimran Singh for a golden duck to Mohammed Shami in the opening over, the innings quickly turned.

Connolly survived two early chances — an lbw review not taken and a dropped return catch — before Arya took full control of the powerplay. He hammered Mohsin Khan for four sixes in a single spell, racing to 40 off 13 balls and reaching his half-century in just 19 deliveries.

Arya’s 93 was built on sharp awareness of length, particularly through dominant leg-side strokeplay, while also adapting to field placements with innovative shots.

At the other end, Connolly initially progressed steadily before accelerating. After reaching 41 off 32 balls, he shifted gears aggressively, taking on both pace and spin. His standout moment came against Aiden Markram, striking three consecutive sixes in an over that cost 32 runs.

The pair combined for a decisive 182-run partnership, propelling PBKS to 179 for 1 in 13 overs. By then, the innings had already produced 16 sixes — nine from Arya and seven from Connolly.

Brief fightback before late surge

Lucknow Super Giants found a window back into the contest when Prince Yadav dismissed Connolly, ending the massive stand. Siddharth followed by removing Arya soon after, triggering a short slowdown in scoring.

Prince finished with disciplined figures of 2 for 25, while Siddharth returned 2 for 35, helping restrict PBKS briefly during the middle overs.

However, the final phase swung decisively back in Punjab’s favour. Marcus Stoinis led a late surge as PBKS added 40 runs in the last three overs, pushing the total beyond 250. The innings featured 21 sixes, the most in a single innings this season.

LSG struggle to keep pace in chase

Chasing 255 required a rapid start, but LSG never matched the required tempo. Even a powerplay score of 61 for 1, boosted by a quick 49-run burst, fell short of the escalating asking rate.

Vyshak Vijaykumar provided a crucial breakthrough by dismissing Ayush Badoni for 35. Rishabh Pant started briskly with two sixes but was contained effectively by Vyshak and Yuzvendra Chahal, who varied their pace and lengths.

Mitchell Marsh fell attempting to accelerate, while Pant’s dismissal soon after left LSG at 128 for 4 in the 13th over. Nicholas Pooran also departed cheaply, continuing his difficult run.

Aiden Markram’s unbeaten 42, along with contributions from Pant (43) and Marsh (40), reduced the margin but never threatened the outcome.

Impact on the tournament

This result reinforces Punjab Kings’ strong position in IPL 2026, with six consecutive wins and a significant boost to their net run rate following a record total.

For Lucknow Super Giants, a third successive defeat leaves them eighth on the table, with their margin of loss further affecting their standings in a tightly contested tournament.
