Coetzee joins SRH after Payne injury for the remainder of IPL 2026
Sunrisers Hyderabad have signed Gerald Coetzee as a replacement for the injured David Payne for the remainder of IPL 2026, continuing a disrupted season for their overseas pace options.
The IPL 2026 campaign has seen SRH reshuffle their fast-bowling resources repeatedly, and Coetzee now arrives for INR 2 crore to bolster the attack ahead of a crucial phase of the tournament.
Payne ruled out after brief stint
David Payne’s campaign ended after just two matches, where the 35-year-old left-arm seamer conceded 70 runs in five overs before suffering an ankle injury.
Payne himself had only recently joined the squad as a replacement for Jack Edwards, who withdrew before the tournament due to a foot injury. This marks the third overseas seam change for SRH this season.
Coetzee adds experience and pace
Gerald Coetzee brings recent international form into the setup, having last featured in South Africa’s T20I series in New Zealand in March. He played a key role in the fourth match, returning figures of 3 for 31.
Coetzee is no stranger to the IPL. He represented Mumbai Indians in 2024, claiming 13 wickets in ten matches, before turning out for Gujarat Titans in 2025, where he picked up two wickets in four appearances.
Injury setbacks continue for SRH
SRH’s pace department has been heavily impacted this season. Brydon Carse was ruled out earlier with a hand injury sustained during a net session and did not feature in a single game.
Sri Lanka fast bowler Dilshan Madushanka was brought in as his replacement, further highlighting the instability in SRH’s overseas bowling group.
Cummins set for return boost
In a positive development, Pat Cummins has been cleared to join the squad after undergoing scans on his back in Sydney.
The SRH captain is yet to feature in IPL 2026 but is expected to target a return against Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur on April 25.
SRH currently sit fifth on the points table with two wins from five matches. Their next fixture is against Chennai Super Kings at home in Hyderabad on Saturday.
What this means
Sunrisers Hyderabad’s season has been shaped by constant changes to their bowling attack, and Coetzee’s arrival offers a fresh option with proven IPL experience. With Cummins nearing a return, SRH will look to stabilise their lineup as the tournament enters a decisive phase.
