SRH go top as Connolly century ends in losing cause
Sunrisers Hyderabad climbed to the top of the IPL 2026 points table after overpowering Punjab Kings by 33 runs in a high-scoring contest, with Cooper Connolly’s unbeaten maiden century ultimately overshadowed by SRH’s relentless batting depth and sharper fielding display.
Sunrisers Hyderabad posted 235 for 4 before restricting Punjab Kings to 202 for 7 despite Connolly’s outstanding 107 not out off 59 balls. The result lifted SRH to 14 points, while PBKS slipped to a third consecutive defeat and remained on 13 points.
Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma once again gave SRH a blistering start. Head smashed 38 off 19 balls, while Abhishek hammered 35 off 13 as SRH stormed to 79 in the powerplay at a run rate of 13.16.
Abhishek signalled the intent immediately after defending the first ball of the innings before launching Arshdeep Singh over extra cover for six. He then attacked Marco Jansen with a sequence of 6, 4, 6 and 4 in a destructive over that pushed SRH beyond 50 in just 3.2 overs.
Head soon joined the assault, pulling Arshdeep for consecutive sixes and punishing anything on the leg side before Lockie Ferguson broke the opening stand by dismissing Abhishek.

PBKS errors prove costly
Punjab Kings briefly regained control when Yuzvendra Chahal removed Head with a wrong’un after the powerplay, but their fielding unravelled at a crucial stage.
Ishan Kishan survived three separate chances on 9, 18 and 19, including two dropped catches and a missed stumping, while Heinrich Klaasen was also reprieved on 9. SRH capitalised fully on those missed opportunities.
Kishan never looked entirely settled early in his innings and operated with a control percentage of 65.43, yet PBKS failed to close him out. Once he settled, the momentum shifted rapidly.
Kishan and Klaasen added 88 runs in eight overs, taking SRH’s scoring rate beyond 11.50 an over. Kishan struck Vijaykumar Vyshak for three consecutive sixes in the 14th over to reach his fifty from 28 balls before eventually falling for 55 off 32.
Klaasen maintained the pressure throughout, finishing with 69 off 43 deliveries. Nitish Kumar Reddy, returning after recovering fitness, added further damage late in the innings with an unbeaten 29 off 13 balls.
The finishing burst underlined SRH’s batting depth once again. Klaasen closed strongly against Vyshak before falling off the final ball of the innings as SRH completed another 220-plus total they successfully defended.
Cummins and SRH expose PBKS top-order struggles
Punjab Kings needed a strong powerplay response but quickly lost control of the chase.
Pat Cummins set the tone with smart captaincy in the opening over. After signalling mid-on back to the boundary, he surprised Priyansh Arya with a short ball angled away, inducing a mistimed pull that Eshan Malinga caught running in from deep backward square leg.
Nitish Kumar Reddy then removed Prabhsimran Singh with the first ball of his spell before Malinga dismissed Shreyas Iyer, leaving PBKS under pressure at 57 for 3 after six overs.
Marcus Stoinis briefly counterattacked, but once he edged Shivang Kumar behind, Connolly was left carrying the innings almost alone.
Connolly stands tall in lone resistance
Connolly had already shown promise during his debut IPL season, but this was his defining innings. He struck boundaries against Cummins and Malinga in the powerplay before steadily rebuilding the chase despite wickets falling regularly around him.
The left-hander reached his fifty from 34 balls before accelerating late with multiple sixes against Malinga. He eventually brought up his maiden century in any format in the final over with a sweeping six over backward square leg against Shivang.
Yet the innings also highlighted Punjab Kings’ lack of support. Connolly remained unbeaten on 107, while the next-highest score in the innings was only 28.
SRH’s bowling attack managed conditions effectively during the chase. Cummins, Shivang Kumar and the left-arm spin pair of Harsh Dubey and Shivang slowed the scoring through variations and slower deliveries into the surface, preventing PBKS from sustaining momentum.
The victory reinforced SRH’s status as one of the most complete sides in IPL 2026. Their aggressive starts, middle-order power and disciplined bowling continue to deliver results, while PBKS were left reflecting on missed chances in the field that transformed the match.
