Samson dominates as CSK outclass DC in clinical chase

Sanju Samson batting during CSK innings against Delhi Capitals

Chennai Super Kings delivered a composed and calculated performance to chase down 156, with Sanju Samson anchoring the innings in a dominant display. The result, built around Samson’s unbeaten 87, reinforced CSK’s growing control in IPL 2026 after a difficult start with the ball.

CSK finished on 159 for 2 to defeat Delhi Capitals’ 155 for 7 by eight wickets, completing the chase with 15 balls to spare. Kartik Sharma provided steady support with an unbeaten 41, but the defining influence remained Samson’s command of the chase.

Bowling turnaround sets the platform

The most significant shift in CSK’s campaign has come through their bowling. After conceding 588 runs for 10 wickets in their first three matches at an economy rate of 11.37, the attack has transformed dramatically. Over the last seven games, they have taken 51 wickets at an economy of 8.15 — the best in the competition.

On a slow surface, Akeal Hosein (4-0-19-1) and Noor Ahmad (3-0-22-2) dictated terms early. Delhi struggled to generate momentum, finishing on 155 for 7 — a total that reflected both the pitch conditions and CSK’s control through the middle overs.

Early squeeze shapes DC innings

The opening phase highlighted how restrictive the surface was. Across the first four overs, there were 15 dot balls, only six boundaries, and limited scoring options. KL Rahul and Pathum Nissanka found timing difficult, repeatedly picking out fielders while trying to force the pace.

CSK capitalised on match-ups but also challenged conventional thinking. Despite a left-handed batter in Nitish Rana arriving at the crease, they persisted with Hosein, who removed Rahul and maintained pressure through the powerplay. Delhi Capitals reached just 37 for 2 after six overs, setting a conservative tone for the innings.

Middle-order disruption limits DC

Delhi’s innings lost further momentum between overs 8 and 11, when they lost three wickets in 19 balls. Axar Patel’s struggles continued, with his dismissal proving particularly costly in a phase where stability was required.

Sameer Rizvi and Tristan Stubbs attempted a recovery, adding 65 off 42 balls. Rizvi’s proactive movement against Anshul Kamboj disrupted one of the tournament’s most effective death-bowling patterns, taking 34 runs off 12 balls without losing a wicket in that spell. However, the late acceleration never fully materialised, with only 53 runs coming from the final five overs.

Samson controls the chase

The defining phase of the match came through Samson’s approach to the chase. Initially measured at 22 off 22 balls, he recalibrated quickly, reaching his half-century within the next ten deliveries.

His control against spin stood out. Against Axar Patel, he scored 12 off 10 balls, including a six, while he dominated Kuldeep Yadav with 25 off just nine balls, striking three sixes and a boundary. This shift ensured that CSK never allowed the required rate to climb.

Kartik Sharma complemented the innings effectively, rotating strike and maintaining stability as CSK avoided any late pressure.

Impact on CSK’s campaign

This victory further underlines CSK’s shift from early-season inconsistency to structured dominance. The improved bowling output, combined with a top-order capable of managing chases with control, has strengthened their position as the tournament approaches its latter stages.

With a net run-rate boost secured and a settled approach evident, CSK’s performance reflects a side that has corrected its early vulnerabilities and now operates with clarity in both disciplines.
