Sanju Samson wins Player of the Tournament at T20 World Cup 2026
India opener Sanju Samson was named Player of the Tournament at the T20 World Cup 2026 after playing a decisive role in India’s triumphant campaign.
The right-handed batter produced several match-winning performances during the tournament, helping India lift the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 title.
Samson shines in crucial matches
Samson did not feature in three of India’s four group-stage matches against the United States of America (USA), Pakistan and the Netherlands.
However, he returned to the defending champions’ lineup after their defeat to South Africa in the Super Eights.
His comeback innings was modest as he scored 24 in a crucial Super Eights fixture against Zimbabwe.
Samson then made a major impact in India’s virtual quarter-final against West Indies, scoring an unbeaten 97 during a tense run chase.
Consistent performances in knockout games
The opener carried his momentum into the knockout stages.
He struck half-centuries in both the semi-final against England in Mumbai and the final against New Zealand.
With three consecutive half-centuries, Samson played a central role in India’s title-winning campaign.
Tournament statistics
Samson finished the tournament as the third leading run-scorer, accumulating 321 runs in five innings.
He achieved this at an impressive average of 199.37 and a strike rate of 199.37.
His performances helped him edge out several contenders for the award.
These included Pakistan’s Sahibzada Farhan, South Africa’s Aiden Markram and Lungi Ngidi, England’s Will Jacks, New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra and Tim Seifert, and USA’s Shadley van Schalkwyk.
Samson reacts to award
Speaking during the post-match presentation, Samson said:
“Feels like a dream. Very happy and grateful. Out of words, out of emotions. To be honest, it started one to two years before. When I was in the 2024 World Cup team where I didn’t play, I kept visualising, kept on working, and this was exactly what I wanted to do.”
Exclusive Indian list
Samson became only the third Indian cricketer to win the Player of the Tournament award at a T20 World Cup.
He joins teammate Jasprit Bumrah and Indian legend Virat Kohli, who won the award twice in 2014 and 2016.
The prestigious list also includes Australia’s Shane Watson, England’s Kevin Pietersen and Sri Lanka’s Tillakaratne Dilshan.
Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi was the first player to receive the coveted honour.
