Multan Sultans vs Islamabad United PSL 11 match 4 saw the Sultans secure a comfortable five-wicket victory, chasing down 172 with more than an over to spare at Gaddafi Stadium.

Sultans restrict United to 171

After being put in to bat, Islamabad United struggled to gain early momentum as Multan’s bowlers kept things tight in the Powerplay.

Peter Siddle, at 41, played a key role by conceding just 29 runs in his four overs and dismissing Devon Conway. Alongside him, Shehzad Gul maintained pressure as United managed only 48 in the Powerplay, the lowest first-innings Powerplay total of the tournament so far.

United attempted to rebuild after the Powerplay, but Multan continued to strike at regular intervals. Arafat Minhas removed Andries Gous, while Momin Qamar delivered a decisive spell, taking 3 for 24 and dismissing Sameer Minhas, Arafat Minhas and Shadab Khan in successive overs.

Mark Chapman provided resistance with a brisk 40 off 21 balls, ensuring United had a competitive total to defend. Faheem Ashraf added late runs, but 171 for 8 still left Multan as favourites at the break.

Philippe and Turner guide smooth chase

Multan Sultans approached the chase with intent, targeting Salman Mirza early to disrupt Islamabad’s plans.

Steve Smith and Josh Philippe capitalised on the Powerplay, with Mirza conceding 32 runs in his first two overs. Despite early pressure, Islamabad managed to pull things back briefly through Imad Wasim, who dismissed Sahibzada Farhan, while Richard Gleeson and Salman Irshad kept the scoring in check.

With the target manageable, Multan paced their innings smartly. Philippe took charge against Shadab Khan, scoring 11 runs in an over, while Turner accelerated in the middle overs.

The pair added 61 runs in just 34 balls, shifting the momentum firmly in Multan’s favour. Philippe’s 55 laid the foundation before Ashton Turner’s unbeaten 43 off 28 balls guided the chase to completion.

Arafat Minhas also played a quick cameo, scoring 25 off 11 deliveries to seal the result.

What this result means

This result gives Multan Sultans a confident start, showcasing their balanced bowling attack and composed batting approach in a chase.

For Islamabad United, despite flashes of promise, the inability to build partnerships and control the middle overs proved costly, highlighting areas that require improvement as the tournament progresses.
