IPL 2026 To Start Without Opening Ceremony

IPL 2026 opening ceremony cancelled before RCB vs Sunrisers Hyderabad opener

The IPL 2026 opening ceremony has been cancelled, with the Indian Premier League set to begin on Saturday without its traditional pre-match celebrations.

The tournament will open with defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru taking on Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

BCCI confirms no opening ceremony

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to cancel the formal opening ceremony as a mark of respect for the 11 people who lost their lives during celebrations following Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL title win at the same venue on 4 June last year.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that no cultural or entertainment programmes will be held before the opening match.

“Due to last year’s tragic incident on 4 June, there will be no formal function on the day of the start of IPL 2026 in Bengaluru,” Saikia said.

“The BCCI is not organising any cultural or entertainment show at the start of IPL 19 [sic] as a mark of respect to the departed souls due to that tragedy on 4 June 2025,” he added.

Closing ceremony planned

While the opening ceremony has been scrapped, the board and the IPL Governing Council are planning a major entertainment event at the end of the tournament.

The closing ceremony is expected to take place on the day of the final, scheduled for 31 May.

Venue and scheduling updates

The 2026 season begins at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, which had previously been barred from hosting matches following last year’s fatalities.

However, the Karnataka government granted permission for games to be held at the venue shortly before the start of the new season.

Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru will play five of their seven home matches at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

In previous seasons, they played all seven home fixtures in Bengaluru, but this year two matches have been relocated to the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium in Raipur.

What this means

The decision to cancel the IPL 2026 opening ceremony marks a significant departure from tradition, reflecting a respectful approach by the BCCI.

While fans will miss the usual pre-tournament spectacle, the focus will remain firmly on cricket as the season begins, with a closing ceremony set to provide entertainment at the end of the competition.
