India players celebrate after defeating New Zealand in the T20 World Cup 2026 final in Ahmedabad

India secured the T20 World Cup 2026 title with a dominant 95-run victory over New Zealand in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

Powered by explosive batting performances and a clinical bowling display led by Jasprit Bumrah, the hosts posted a massive total before dismissing New Zealand for 159 in 19 overs to seal the championship.

Sanju Samson was the standout performer with the bat, scoring a blistering 89 off 46 balls. His knock featured eight sixes and five fours and laid the foundation for India’s imposing total.

India post massive total

India’s innings began in emphatic fashion as openers Abhishek Sharma and Samson launched an aggressive assault on the New Zealand bowling attack.

The pair added 98 runs in just seven overs before Rachin Ravindra broke the partnership on the first delivery of the eighth over. Sharma departed for 52 off 21 balls, an explosive innings that included six fours and three sixes.

Ishan Kishan then joined Samson and continued the momentum. The duo added 105 runs for the second wicket in only 47 deliveries, keeping the scoreboard racing.

Both batters fell in the 16th over to James Neesham. Samson finished as India’s top scorer with 89, while Kishan smashed a quickfire 54 off 25 balls that included four sixes and four boundaries.

Neesham struck again in the same over to remove India captain Suryakumar Yadav for a golden duck, briefly slowing the hosts’ charge at 204/4.

However, Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma stitched together a 22-run stand before Pandya was dismissed for 18 in the penultimate over.

Shivam Dube then added late fireworks with an unbeaten 26 from just eight balls, striking three fours and two sixes to help India finish on 255/5 in 20 overs.

For New Zealand, Neesham was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3/46, while Ravindra and Matt Henry took one wicket each.

Bumrah leads bowling masterclass

Chasing a daunting target of 256, New Zealand struggled against India’s disciplined bowling attack.

Tim Seifert provided the only major resistance, scoring 52 off 26 balls with five sixes and two fours. Apart from him, only Mitchell Santner and Daryl Mitchell reached double figures with 43 and 17 respectively.

The rest of the batting lineup collapsed under pressure as New Zealand were bowled out for 159 in 19 overs.

Jasprit Bumrah delivered a match-winning spell, claiming four wickets for just 15 runs in his four overs.

Axar Patel supported him with three wickets, while Varun Chakravarthy, Hardik Pandya and Abhishek Sharma each chipped in with one wicket.

Historic achievement for India

The victory marked a historic milestone for India. They became the first team to win the T20 World Cup at home and also the first side to claim back-to-back T20 World Cup titles.

With dominant batting displays and a ruthless bowling performance in the final, India sealed a memorable triumph in Ahmedabad.
