Fakhar Zaman Banned for Ball Tampering in PSL 11

Fakhar Zaman suspended for ball tampering offence in PSL 11

Lahore Qalandars opener Fakhar Zaman has been handed a two-match suspension following a disciplinary breach during a Pakistan Super League fixture. The Fakhar Zaman ban comes after he was found guilty of a Level 3 offence under the PSL Code of Conduct.

The Pakistan Cricket Board confirmed the sanction on Monday, stemming from an incident during Lahore Qalandars’ match against Karachi Kings at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Sunday, 29 March.

Incident and disciplinary action

The offence occurred in the closing stages of the match when on-field umpires penalised Lahore Qalandars by five runs and ordered a ball change ahead of the final over of Karachi Kings’ innings.

The charge was brought by on-field umpires Shahid Saikat and Faisal Khan Afridi, along with TV umpire Asif Yaqoob and fourth umpire Tariq Rasheed.

Zaman denied the allegation and opted for a full disciplinary hearing under the PSL Code of Conduct.

Hearing and verdict

Match referee Roshan Mahanama conducted the hearing, reviewing all available evidence and granting Zaman a personal hearing before delivering the verdict.

Lahore Qalandars captain Shaheen Shah Afridi, team director Sameen Rana, and team manager Farooq Anwar were also present during the proceedings.

Zaman was charged under Article 2.14, which relates to changing the condition of the ball in breach of clause 41.3 of the PSL Playing Conditions.

A Level 3 offence carries a minimum one-match suspension and can extend to a maximum of two matches. The referee opted for the maximum penalty in this case, resulting in a two-match ban.

Upcoming fixtures impacted

Lahore Qalandars are scheduled to face Multan Sultans on Friday, 3 April at Gaddafi Stadium, followed by a clash against Islamabad United on Thursday, 9 April at the National Bank Stadium in Karachi.

Zaman’s suspension will rule him out of these fixtures unless overturned.

Any appeal against the decision must be submitted to the PSL Technical Committee within 48 hours of receiving the written ruling.

What this means

The Fakhar Zaman ban is a significant setback for Lahore Qalandars, particularly given his role as an opening batter.

Disciplinary actions of this nature can have a direct impact on team balance, especially in a tightly contested tournament where player availability and momentum are critical.
