Esterhuizen 57 Helps South Africa Level Series

Connor Esterhuizen batting during South Africa vs New Zealand T20I

South Africa series level was achieved after a 19-run win over New Zealand, with Connor Esterhuizen scoring 57 and the bowlers delivering a decisive performance.

South Africa posted 164 for 5 (Esterhuizen 57, Jamieson 2-29) and then bowled New Zealand out for 145 (Robinson 32, Coetzee 3-31, Subrayen 2-13, Maharaj 2-22, Baartman 2-30) to level the five-match T20I series and force a decider.

Esterhuizen anchors South Africa innings

South Africa’s total was built around Connor Esterhuizen’s 57, the only substantial score among the top order. He shared an 81-run second-wicket stand with Tony de Zorzi, the highest partnership of the series for South Africa.

After Wiaan Mulder fell for a second-ball duck, Esterhuizen began cautiously before accelerating. He clipped Kyle Jamieson for his first boundary, then pulled him for six as he found rhythm.

He attacked Ben Sears and Jimmy Neesham, striking multiple boundaries, including a sequence that brought him 34 runs in 12 balls through the midwicket region. His fifty came off 33 balls in the tenth over.

South Africa were 81 for 1 when Esterhuizen was dismissed, caught by debutant Katene Clarke after a well-judged diving catch.

Sears restricts late scoring

Ben Sears ensured South Africa did not push beyond a moderate total. With South Africa at 121 for 4, he bowled a tight 16th over, conceding just one run off the bat.

He returned for the final over with South Africa at 162 for 5 and restricted Rubin Hermann and George Linde with a mix of slower balls and yorkers. His final two overs cost just two runs, and he finished with 1 for 22 in four overs.

South Africa bowlers dominate chase

New Zealand’s chase never gained momentum. Tim Robinson top-scored with 32, but no partnership exceeded the opening stand of 28.

Gerald Coetzee led the pace attack with 3 for 31, setting the tone early.

The decisive phase came through spin. Prenelan Subrayen and Keshav Maharaj combined to take four wickets while conceding 35 runs in seven overs, reducing New Zealand from 76 for 3 in the ninth over to 112 for 7 in the 14th.

Subrayen struck quickly, dismissing Dane Cleaver and Bevan Jacobs with full deliveries that kept both batters late on their shots.

Maharaj followed with two wickets in his third over, removing Nick Kelly at deep midwicket and then bowling Cole McConchie through the gate. New Zealand slipped to 112 for 7, still 53 runs short. Maharaj finished with figures of 4-0-22-2.

New Zealand were bowled out inside 19 overs.

New Zealand weakened by changes

New Zealand were without several key players from the side that took a 2-1 lead earlier in the week. Mitchell Santner, Devon Conway and Lockie Ferguson were rested.

Stand-in captain Tom Latham was unavailable after being hit on the thumb in the previous match and will undergo scans to assess his availability for the final game.

Debutants make impact

Katene Clarke made an impression with a sharp catch and a quick 9 off five balls.

South Africa debutant Prenelan Subrayen also made an immediate impact, taking two wickets in his opening spell.

What this result means

South Africa series level now sets up a decisive final match in the five-match series.

With both teams showing inconsistent performances, the outcome will depend on execution under pressure in the decider, particularly in key middle-over phases with both bat and ball.
