Cooper Connolly Leads PBKS to Nervy Win on IPL Debut
Punjab Kings held their nerve in a tense chase to secure victory in New Chandigarh, with Cooper Connolly delivering a composed performance on debut. Cooper Connolly innings proved decisive as PBKS overcame late pressure to win with five balls to spare against Gujarat Titans.
The chase began in dominant fashion before a sudden collapse threatened to derail Punjab’s progress, but Connolly guided the side home with support from Marco Jansen and Xavier Bartlett.
PBKS overcome late wobble
Prabhsimran Singh and Connolly provided PBKS with a strong start, taking the attack to the bowlers early in the innings. However, Prasidh Krishna triggered a collapse that shifted momentum back in Gujarat Titans’ favour.
Punjab lost four wickets in the space of 16 balls for just eight runs, turning what had been a comfortable chase into a nervy finish. Despite the pressure, Connolly remained composed, anchoring the innings until the end.
Connolly anchors the chase
At 121 for 6, with 42 runs required off 30 balls, the match was in the balance. Connolly responded with calm authority, taking on Kagiso Rabada in the 16th over.
He brought up his fifty by cutting a short delivery over backward point for four before pulling another short ball for six later in the over. His controlled approach ensured PBKS regained control of the chase.
Support came from Marco Jansen and Xavier Bartlett, who struck crucial sixes in the 17th and 19th overs to ease the pressure and effectively seal the result.
Chahal shines as GT fall short
Earlier, Gujarat Titans posted a below-par total despite promising starts from their top order. Jos Buttler top-scored with 39 off 33 balls, while Shubman Gill made 38.
Yuzvendra Chahal was instrumental in restricting GT, dismissing both Gill and Buttler. Gill fell attempting a slog sweep to deep midwicket, while Buttler was caught at long-on by Bartlett after struggling to accelerate.
Middle-overs slowdown hurts GT
GT began strongly, striking nine boundaries in the powerplay through Gill, Sai Sudharsan and Buttler. However, the innings lost momentum in the middle overs, where they managed 77 for 3.
Buttler faced 14 dot balls in his 33-ball stay, while Gill slowed after a brisk start, scoring just 12 runs off his final 12 deliveries.
Glenn Phillips made an encouraging debut cameo, hitting a six and a four early, but could not convert his start into a substantial score. In the end, three of GT’s top four crossed 25 but none went beyond 39.
Vyshak impresses in death overs
Vijaykumar Vyshak played a key role with the ball, particularly in the latter stages of the innings. After being taken on early, he returned to dismiss Phillips and then struck twice in the death overs.
He removed Washington Sundar with a slower delivery and later had Shahrukh Khan caught at deep square leg, ensuring GT could not push beyond a modest total.

Punjab Kings’ aggressive approach with the bat made a significant difference, as they struck 14 sixes compared to GT’s three.
GT also conceded 14 extras, including 11 wides, with four coming in the final over from Arshdeep Singh.

Cooper Connolly’s match-winning knock on debut provides Punjab Kings with a strong middle-order option going forward.
For Gujarat Titans, the inability to convert starts and the lack of acceleration in the middle overs proved costly, underlining the importance of building on early momentum in T20 cricket.
