RCB Smash 240 to Beat MI in IPL 2026 Thriller

RCB players celebrating after scoring 240 against Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026

Royal Challengers Bengaluru produced a dominant all-round display in IPL 2026, posting a record 240 at Wankhede before defending it to beat Mumbai Indians by 18 runs.

Despite losing the toss on a dew-affected night, RCB overcame the odds with a powerful batting performance and disciplined bowling effort to secure a convincing victory.

Salt and Patidar power RCB to massive total

Phil Salt and Rajat Patidar laid the foundation for RCB’s massive 240 for 4 with aggressive knocks of 78 off 36 and 53 off 20 respectively.

The pair unleashed relentless attacking strokes, both hitting a hat-trick of sixes during their innings. Together, they struck 11 sixes and 10 fours, completely shifting momentum in RCB’s favour.

Virat Kohli contributed a steady 50 off 38 balls, though he struggled to match the tempo at the other end. RCB still maintained a strong scoring rate thanks to the sustained aggression from Salt and Patidar.

RCB reached 71 in the powerplay, with Salt scoring 47 off 22 balls, including three sixes and a four off Mitchell Santner. Even Jasprit Bumrah’s early introduction could not stem the flow of runs.

Patidar’s blitz shuts MI out

Mumbai Indians briefly found control through Shardul Thakur, who removed Salt and kept Kohli quiet with disciplined bowling.

However, Patidar quickly dismantled any hopes of a comeback. He attacked Mayank Markande with three consecutive sixes, including a reverse-sweep, and accelerated RCB’s scoring dramatically.

A 10-ball over from Thakur went for 23 runs as RCB surged to 167 for 1 in 13 overs. Tim David’s late cameo of 34 off 16 ensured RCB crossed the 240 mark despite a quieter finish.

Jasprit Bumrah remained economical with 35 runs in his four overs but went wicketless for the fifth consecutive IPL match.

Spinners turn the game

Mumbai Indians began their chase strongly, racing to 48 for no loss in four overs and 72 without loss in seven.

Ryan Rickelton led the early charge, but RCB’s spinners turned the game decisively. Suyash Sharma struck immediately, removing both Rickelton and Tilak Varma in his first over.

Krunal Pandya applied further pressure with a controlled spell of 4 overs for 26 runs, including the key wicket of Suryakumar Yadav.

RCB’s spinners bowled eight overs for 73 runs and took three crucial wickets, significantly slowing MI’s chase.

MI fall short despite Rutherford fight

Hardik Pandya provided brief momentum with a quick 40, but the rising asking rate proved too steep.

Sherfane Rutherford fought back with an unbeaten 71 off 31 balls, but his effort came too late to influence the result as Mumbai finished on 222 for 5.

RCB’s disciplined bowling ensured the required rate climbed beyond reach, sealing an 18-run victory.

What this means

Royal Challengers Bengaluru demonstrated their ability to win even in challenging conditions, combining explosive batting with effective spin bowling. Posting 240 at Wankhede and defending it comfortably underlines their balance. For Mumbai Indians, the defeat highlights the impact of middle-overs control and missed opportunities in containing opposition totals.
