IPL 2026: Punjab Kings chase 220 to stun Sunrisers

Shreyas Iyer batting during Punjab Kings chase in IPL 2026

Punjab Kings pulled off a high-scoring chase in IPL 2026, defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad by six wickets after overhauling a daunting 220-run target with more than an over to spare.

In a match dominated by explosive top-order batting, Shreyas Iyer anchored the chase with an unbeaten 69, while Priyansh Arya (57) and Prabhsimran Singh (51) laid the platform with a rapid opening stand.

Sunrisers Hyderabad had earlier posted 219 for 6, but their momentum faded after a blistering start.

SRH storm before sudden slowdown

Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head launched a stunning assault at the top, putting together a 120-run opening partnership. Abhishek led the charge with a commanding 74, while Head added 38.

SRH raced to 100 in just 35 balls, registering one of the fastest powerplay hundreds in IPL history. Their 105 for no loss after six overs was the joint third-highest powerplay score in the tournament.

However, the innings lost direction after that explosive start. From 120 without loss in eight overs, SRH managed only 99 runs in the final 12 overs.

Shashank’s breakthrough changes the game

The turning point came when Shreyas Iyer introduced Shashank Singh into the attack. His medium pace disrupted SRH’s rhythm immediately.

He first dismissed Travis Head with a slower delivery, before removing Abhishek Sharma for 74 off 28 balls in the same spell. Shashank finished with figures of 2 for 20 in three overs, maintaining an economy rate of 6.66 in a game that produced 442 runs.

Ishan Kishan added quick runs, but Marco Jansen took a sharp catch to end his innings. Heinrich Klaasen struggled for fluency and managed 39 off 33 balls, while SRH ultimately settled for 219 for 6 — notably the lowest total after scoring 100 or more in the powerplay in IPL history.

PBKS respond with fearless batting

Punjab Kings began their chase aggressively through Arya and Prabhsimran, who stitched together a 99-run partnership.

Arya struck a 16-ball fifty, taking apart the bowling during the powerplay, while Prabhsimran targeted Jaydev Unadkat with a series of sixes on his way to 51.

Despite their strong start, PBKS faced a brief wobble as Shivang Kumar triggered a collapse. He dismissed Arya and Prabhsimran in quick succession and later removed Cooper Connolly, leaving PBKS needing 92 from 58 balls.

Shreyas seals the chase

With the game in the balance, Shreyas Iyer took control. After a steady start, he accelerated sharply, targeting Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harshal Patel and Eshan Malinga.

He struck multiple sixes and boundaries to bring the equation down rapidly, ensuring PBKS stayed ahead of the required rate.

Although Nehal Wadhera fell late, Shreyas and Shashank Singh calmly finished the chase in the 19th over, ending SRH’s four-match winning streak against Punjab.

This marked the tenth time Punjab Kings have successfully chased a 200-plus target in IPL history — the most by any team.

What this means

Punjab Kings’ ability to chase down massive totals highlights their batting depth and composure under pressure in IPL 2026. For Sunrisers Hyderabad, the defeat underscores the importance of maintaining momentum beyond the powerplay, especially after such dominant starts.
