Tamim Iqbal Appointed BCB President After Board Dissolution
The Bangladesh government has appointed Tamim Iqbal as the new president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) following the dissolution of the previous board. Tamim Iqbal’s appointment marks a major shift in Bangladesh cricket administration after weeks of controversy surrounding the board’s leadership.
At 37, Tamim becomes the youngest president in the history of the BCB.
Government dissolves previous board
The decision came after a five-member investigation committee reviewed allegations linked to the BCB elections held in October last year.
Following the findings, the government dissolved the board of directors led by Aminul Islam. The National Sports Council (NSC) confirmed that the board was not formed properly and was unable to function effectively.
Speaking at a press briefing, NSC sports director Mohammed Aminul Ahesan stated that the ICC had been informed of the decision and expressed confidence that the move would be upheld.
New ad-hoc committee formed
Tamim Iqbal will now lead an 11-member ad-hoc committee tasked with overseeing the board’s operations.
The committee includes former Bangladesh captain Minhajul Abedin and former cricketer and commentator Athar Ali Khan. Other members are Rashna Imam, Mirza Yeasir Abbas, Syed Ibrahim Ahmed, Israfil Khasru, Tanjil Chowdhury, Salman Ispahani, Rafiqul Islam and Fahim Sinha.
Background to the decision
The BCB had been under increasing pressure from the sports ministry over multiple issues, including the legitimacy of the last board election, the national team’s absence from the recent ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, and allegations of political interference and favouritism.
The situation worsened after four directors resigned last week, taking the total number of resignations since January to six.
Aminul Islam had earlier stated his intention to remain as BCB president despite the mounting challenges and the submission of the investigation report.
Tamim’s cricketing and administrative journey
Tamim Iqbal is widely regarded as one of Bangladesh’s greatest cricketers, having played 391 international matches across all formats, including 387 for Bangladesh.
He captained the national side in 38 matches, leading them to 21 victories, including a notable 2-1 ODI series win over South Africa in 2022.
After retiring from international cricket in early 2025, Tamim continued to play domestic cricket. However, a heart attack during a Dhaka Premier League match later that year brought an end to his playing career.
He subsequently became a councillor of a Dhaka-based cricket club and announced his candidacy for a BCB director role in the 2025 elections. Tamim later withdrew from the race, alleging abuse of power in the electoral process.
What this means
Tamim Iqbal’s appointment signals a significant transition period for Bangladesh cricket governance.
With an ad-hoc committee now in place, the focus will be on restoring stability and addressing structural concerns within the board, as Bangladesh cricket looks to move forward following a period of administrative uncertainty.
