MI vs KKR IPL 2026: Rohit, Rickelton Chase 221

Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton lead Mumbai Indians record chase vs KKR IPL 2026

Match 2 of IPL 2026 produced a record-breaking chase as Mumbai Indians hunted down 221 in 19.1 overs to secure a six-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders.

The result ended two long-standing trends, with Mumbai Indians winning their opening match of an IPL season for the first time since 2012 and successfully chasing a 220-plus target for the first time in eight attempts.

Rohit and Rickelton power record chase

Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton laid the foundation for the massive chase with a dominant 148-run opening stand off just 71 balls.

Rohit rolled back the years with a blistering 78 off 38 balls. After a cautious start at 12 off eight, he accelerated rapidly, reaching a 23-ball half-century, his fastest in IPL history. He also took on Varun Chakravarthy, striking him for a six and a boundary early in his spell.

Mumbai raced to 80 in the powerplay and crossed 100 in just 8.1 overs. By the time Rohit was dismissed, caught by Anukul Roy running back from mid-off, the required rate had dropped below nine.

Rickelton, selected ahead of Quinton de Kock, justified the decision with an aggressive 81 off 43 balls. He took control after the powerplay, attacking Sunil Narine and bringing up a 24-ball fifty. His innings ended only after a sharp direct hit from the deep by Anukul Roy.

Middle order seals comfortable win

After the opening stand, Suryakumar Yadav, used as the Impact Sub, fell quickly, but the chase was already under control.

Hardik Pandya remained unbeaten on 18 off 11 balls, while Tilak Varma supported him through the closing stages. Naman Dhir struck the winning runs as Mumbai completed the highest successful chase at the Wankhede Stadium with five balls remaining.

KKR post strong total but fall short

Earlier, Kolkata Knight Riders posted 220 for 4, their second-highest total against Mumbai Indians in the IPL.

Ajinkya Rahane led the charge with 67 off 40 balls, while Angkrish Raghuvanshi contributed 51 off 29. The pair helped KKR build momentum after a rapid start.

Finn Allen provided early fireworks, taking on AM Ghazanfar and contributing to a 26-run over off Hardik Pandya as KKR raced past 50 in just 3.5 overs.

Later, Raghuvanshi accelerated after being dropped by Rohit Sharma, adding 60 runs off 30 balls with Rinku Singh, who finished unbeaten on 33 off 21. KKR crossed 200 in the 19th over, setting a challenging target.

Thakur and MI bowlers restrict momentum

Shardul Thakur played a key role in pulling things back for Mumbai. He dismissed Finn Allen, Cameron Green and Ajinkya Rahane, helping slow KKR’s scoring in the middle overs.

Support came from Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult, who maintained pressure and prevented KKR from pushing beyond their eventual total of 220.

What this means

Mumbai Indians’ emphatic chase sets an early tone in IPL 2026, showcasing their batting depth and intent.

For Kolkata Knight Riders, despite posting a strong total, the lack of penetration in their bowling attack proved costly, highlighting areas they will need to address moving forward in the tournament.
