PSL 11 New Rule Allows Two Team Sheets Before Toss
The PSL two team sheet rule has been introduced for the 2026 season, with the Pakistan Super League allowing captains to submit two different playing XIs before the toss to reduce its impact on match outcomes.
The rule was implemented during the opening match in Lahore, where Lahore Qalandars faced Hyderabad Kingsmen.
New rule explained
Under the updated playing conditions, captains are now permitted to submit two separate team sheets prior to the toss.
Before the coin flip, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Marnus Labuschagne each handed two different line-ups to the match referee. The final playing XI was then confirmed only after the toss result was known.
The regulation falls under Clause 1.2.1 of the PSL playing conditions, which states that each captain may submit two different XI line-ups in writing before the toss.
Each line-up must include 11 players and up to four substitute fielders. After the toss, captains must finalise one of the submitted XIs by signing the selected team sheet.
Once confirmed, no player in the chosen XI can be changed before the match begins without the consent of the opposing captain.
Reducing toss advantage
The change is seen as a significant step towards reducing the influence of the toss, particularly in conditions where it can heavily impact the outcome.
In night matches, dew often makes the ball slippery, limiting the effectiveness of spin bowling in the second innings and favouring teams chasing.
With the new rule in place, teams can better adapt their line-ups based on whether they bat or bowl first.
For example, a side batting first may opt for an additional fast bowler instead of a spinner, while a team chasing can strengthen its batting accordingly.
What this means
The introduction of the PSL two team sheet rule represents a strategic shift in how teams approach match preparation.
By allowing flexibility after the toss, the PSL aims to create more balanced contests and reduce conditions-based advantages, potentially leading to fairer outcomes across the tournament.
