New Zealand Level Series with Dominant Win Over South Africa
New Zealand vs South Africa saw the hosts bounce back strongly to level the five-match T20I series 1-1 with a convincing 68-run win in Hamilton.
New Zealand posted 175 for 6, powered by Devon Conway’s 60, before bowling South Africa out for just 107 to seal the victory.
Ben Sears and Lockie Ferguson led the charge with the ball, sharing six wickets between them in a sharp fast-bowling display.
New Zealand build competitive total
After being sent in to bat on a surface considered good for batting, New Zealand relied on Devon Conway’s experience to anchor their innings.
He was the standout performer, scoring 60 and providing stability at the top. The opening partnership of 48 runs was the highest of the innings, as no other batter managed to stay long with him.
South Africa’s spinners struggled for control, with Keshav Maharaj and George Linde conceding 78 runs in their combined six overs.
Conway brought up his fifty off 39 balls, hitting a slog-sweep off Maharaj and a six over long-on against Wiaan Mulder. He scored 80% of his runs on the leg side.
He eventually fell trying to accelerate, leaving New Zealand at 124 for 4 with 27 balls remaining.
South Africa had a chance to restrict the total when New Zealand slipped to 126 for 5 after 16 overs, but their death bowling faltered.
Nqobani Mokeona impressed with 0 for 22 in four overs, while Gerald Coetzee and Ottneil Baartman kept things relatively tight.
However, Keshav Maharaj’s final over proved costly as Cole McConchie struck a six before Josh Clarkson smashed 16 runs off four balls to finish unbeaten on 26 from nine deliveries.
New Zealand added 42 runs in the last three overs to reach 175 for 6.
South Africa collapse under pressure
South Africa began well, reaching 24 without loss in the first three overs, but quickly lost momentum.
Connor Esterhuizen was dismissed after a good catch by Tim Robinson, while Wiaan Mulder fell for 16 off 20 balls.
Tony de Zorzi followed soon after, leaving South Africa at 31 for 3 in the seventh over.
Jason Smith continued his struggles, falling for 12 after being caught off Mitchell Santner, who had also dismissed him in the previous match.
Ben Sears then returned to dismantle the middle and lower order with effective short-ball bowling.
He removed Dian Forrester and Gerald Coetzee, reducing South Africa to 91 for 7 after 13 overs.
Lockie Ferguson also played a key role as South Africa were bowled out in the 16th over for 107, one of their lowest totals in T20Is.
George Linde top-scored with 33, the only batter to cross 30.
Series level at 1-1
New Zealand’s dominant performance ensured the five-match T20I series is now level at 1-1.
Interestingly, both the men’s and women’s series between the two sides are tied at 1-1, with South Africa women having won earlier in the day.
Score Summary:
New Zealand 175 for 6 (Conway 60, Clarkson 26*, Mulder 2-14)
South Africa 107 all out (Linde 33, Sears 3-14, Ferguson 3-16)
New Zealand won by 68 runs.
