Former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed is set to be appointed as the new head coach of Pakistan’s Test cricket team, according to reports.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is expected to officially confirm the appointment soon, with Sarfaraz likely to begin his role ahead of Pakistan’s upcoming Test series against Bangladesh.
The coaching position had been vacant in recent months, with Azhar Mahmood serving as interim head coach during Pakistan’s series against South Africa.
Sarfaraz, who previously captained Pakistan across formats, is regarded as one of the most experienced figures in the country’s recent cricket history. His leadership played a key role in Pakistan’s memorable ICC Champions Trophy triumph in 2017.
Pakistan’s next assignment in the longest format will be a two-Test series against Bangladesh scheduled for May. The series forms part of the ICC World Test Championship 2027 cycle.
The first Test between Pakistan and Bangladesh is set to begin on May 8, while the second Test will start on May 16.
Sarfaraz represented Pakistan in 54 Test matches during his career, scoring 3,031 runs including four centuries and 21 half-centuries.
If confirmed, his appointment would mark a new chapter in Pakistan’s red-ball setup as the team looks to strengthen its performance in the World Test Championship.
